Christmas songs

Postby MarkW » Tue Dec 16, 2008 5:42 pm

Christmas is nearly here once again and all the usual dreadful songs are on the radio. You know tracks like ‘Merry Christmas Everybody’ by Slade and ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’ by Wizzard. Can’t stand them.

So are there any Christmas songs that are actually any good? An obvious contender has to be ‘Fairytale of New York’. Any others?

Del/Mark - "Fairytale of New York" is really the only one that does anything for me .

Greg Lake was the culprit for I believe in Father Christmas

As for good Xmas songs - yes there are some.

Jingle Bells by the Brian Setzer Orchestra
Frosty the Snowman by Reverend Horton Heat
A whole album of Xmas songs by Los Straitjackets (twangy surf tex mex music at it's best)
Here comes Santa Claus by Billy Idol (a whole album of his is available but this is the choice track)
Rocking around the Xmas Tree by The Bootleg Beatles

and of course -

What's with Terry by the Undertones
(Then came the day Terry always did dread
Christmas had come a present lay on his bed
A Johnny 7 or a cuddly toy?
No horn rim glasses fit for a boy)

Nothin'wrong with Slade in my opinion. But radio in England is xmas infected and here in Holland you hear it seldom.
I have got a whole LP of Slade xmas-songs.
Pogues offcourse, kept off the no.1 spot years ago by the dreadful elviscover of the petshopboys. How about aztec camera walk out to winter, or Siouxsie B-side il est ne le divin enfant. They might be giants: santa's beard.

You old misery guts, they're great songs! One of my favourites is actually by a band I really can't stand...E17.What a bunch of divs they were, but that balad they made around '93 was excellent, shame somebody else didn't make it.

Oetzi wrote:To be honest: I only judge original, traditional Christmas songs as the ones I want to listen to on Christmas Eve. It's got to be romantic and nostalgic. So "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht" ("Silent night, holy night") is THE ONE song above all others.
And I only want to hear Christmas Songs on dec 24th / 25th. Played earlier in december they come along with a "commercial" aura - especially in shopping malls... I call it abuse.
So I feel quite comfortable this morning (7am in Switzerland): The local radio station is continously playing nice christmas songs of Freddie Mercury, Slade, Wham, Bing Crosby, David Bowie - more to come.
Fröhliche Weihnachten!

Another old misery guts :D

Christmas is great and I like hearing the songs ASAP, it cheers you up when you're freezing your bollocks off on the way to work.

Right, that's it for another year... and if they ban Wham's "Last Christmas" in the next 11 months from ever being played again I for one will not shed any tears. The only good thing about that song is that the royalties still go to the Band Aid Trust.

And while they are passing laws can they also ban tv shows such as "Top 100 Xmas songs of all time" and Top 100 Xmas TV moments of all time". I am heartily sick of seeing Del and Rodney faint in the auction room this year. Over 200 channels and I still end up seaching my DVD collection for something to watch.

Happy grumpy new year.
