Undertones gigs 1976 - 1983

Postby MarkW » Thu May 07, 2009 8:55 pm

Anyone got any special memories of Undertones gigs when Feargal was lead singer?
To my great regret I only saw them the once first time round – at Poole Arts Centre in June 1981. I was 15 at the time and it’s a night I’ll never forget. The energy, the fabulous music, Poole’s famous bouncing floor and the endless encores not only by The Undertones but also support band Dolly Mixture (before their Captain Sensible days).

I know that some of you have seen the band dozens, even hundreds, of times over the years – so what was the best gig for you :?:

Like you Mark, I did not see them much in the early days.
just 2 for me.... Bournemouth Winter Gardens and Taunton Odeon (or was it The Gaumont?).

Poole Arts centre was amazing!
That Bouncing floor will remain in the memories of all who witnessed it, for ever!

I saw "the Beat" there!
Imagine what happened to the floor when all the stomping and jiving happened that night.

also saw at Poole Arts Centre....
Sham 69, Vapors and The Jam.

A Cracking venue!!!

Mark did you go to any other venues around Bournemouth?
I also saw The Specials at Maison Royale Complex, in Bournemouth.
what about you???

Hi Sire,

No I never made it any Bournemouth gigs back then but I know that a lot of bands thought the Poole venue was one of the best. At one time in the late 70s/early 80s there seemed to be a major gig there every month. I didn't keep a list of all the shows I went to there but off the top off my head I rememeber Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Jam and The Ramones. Needless to say the latter brings back particularly fine memories! There were loads of other gigs which were sold out before I could get hold of tickets including The Clash and The Who. I was told afterwards that first song of the The Clash gig was 'White Riot'. The place went bezerk! :D

To be honest its all a blur from that time. Cider has that sort of effect on you when your young!

My first Undertones gig was May 1979 at Aylesbury Friars with the Knack and the Chords supporting. A fabulous gig with the Undertones playing the Boys song "TCP" - fabulous!! Saw the original era band another 4 times after that - always great!

Back then I was very small (but I did what I was told...); actually, I have seen The Undertones only once (!), nov. 2007, Dublin, The Tripod.
I believe that all you will surely know this beautiful site hosting pictures of gigs fron the early 80s; but in the remote chance someone should have accidently missed it, visit here

wonderful thrilling photos of the Undertones. 1980. Boys, pay attention, it almost hurts! By the way, there are also great photos of other bands...
